Locally Owned Businesses Celebrate Survival! AIBA Special Event

Press Room

Albuquerque, NM (June 15) – Films about finding America…right around the corner

Imagine driving all the way across America, but enjoying it only from two-lane roads (no interstate highways) and only giving your business to locally-owned stores (no chain stores or restaurants).  Interesting!  Two documentaries show how finding locally owned stores and supporting them contributes to saving America – not only financially but socially, as well.

When: Sunday, July 5, 1 to 3:30 pm (includes Q & A between 2 films)
Where: The Guild Cinema, 3405 Central NE, Albuquerque
What: Twilight Becomes Night (36 minutes) and “Independent America:  The Two-Lane Search for Mom and Pop”  (81 minutes)

How Much:  Free to AIBA Members and $3 for public ($2 for students/seniors)

AIBA, the Albuquerque Independent Businesses Alliance, celebrates “Independents Week” (celebrating independently owned businesses) by bringing you these films.

"Neighborhood Stores Save Us - The Time Has Come to Save Them" – illustrates how important your locally owned businesses are to your community.  It's not just a "good thing to do."  When you buy local, you're helping create jobs and  keep dollars in your community working for you and your family.  Come learn more about how you can help through spreading the word. (www.TwilightBecomesNight.com)

“Independent America” is a documentary following a married couple (the filmmakers) across 13,000 miles of America looking for locally owned businesses in the sea of big box stores and fast food chains.  Entertaining interviews with activists, union members, entrepreneurs, political leaders and concerned Americans, plus a “frank conversation” with a top executive from Wal-Mart.  Eye-opening. (www.independentamerica.net).

Between the two movies, at about 1:40 p.m., there will be a brief discussion and Q&A, led by Melinda Rand-Kenefic, chair of the AIBA Speakers’ Bureau.  The second movie will start at about 2:00.
