Save The Local Economy - Three Stores At A Time
(Thanks to AIBA member Jill Douthett for passing along this great info)
It can get overwhelming - there's so much we want to do to help - in our community and our world - but where to start? (and we've only got so much money.) Well, the 3/50 project (Mission: Save the local economy, three stores at a time) offers something easy to do, to help local biz survive and thrive.
3: What three independently owned businesses would you miss if they went away? Stop in. Say Hello. Make a purchase (even a small one.)
50: Spent just $50 a month at those three businesses, combined.
If half of the U.S. population did this, we would generate more than $42 trillion in revenue. For every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays local.
So, why don't you pick three and get going! (They don't HAVE to be AIBA members, but that'd be nice...)
My three five six are:
Slate Street Cafe (AIBA member). Great NYC lofty vibe here in Albuquerque. Excellent food; terrific wine list; service with a smile...and absolultey pristine restrooms. (I also know and respect the owner, Myra Ghattas, one of the hardest-working people ever.)
El Norteno (Not an AIBA member). Great Mexican food within walking distance from my house. Cold, cold beer. Lots of fresh chips. Friendly service.
Kelly Liquors. (Not an AIBA member). Good wine selection within walking distance. And, they're always happy to help me find things (they even offer to do so).
Cervantes (AIBA member). LOVE their salsa (available at markets all over the city). Greatt margaritas at their wonderful retro "bar bar" - if they don't know your name when you come in, they will by the time you leave. (And, I know and respect Arian, one of the owners, who serves on the AIBA board.)
Celebro Natural Living (AIBA member). Friendly service - free trade, organic, good stuff - every thing from place mats to clothing to baby toys. I can always find a different, affordable (and guilt-free) hostess gift there....and they're walking distance to...
Papers (AIBA member). Just chock full of cool, quality things I didn't know I needed - including one of the best selection of greeting cards around. The paper is frameable art all by itself.
Hmmm...notice some common themes here? service, quality, different, walkable...
