NM Biz Weekly Headline: Kiplinger's rankks Duke City second
Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine has ranked Albuquerque its No. 2 top city in its annual “10 Best Cities of 2009.” The list comes out in its July issue that will go on newsstands June 9...The magazine said, “Albuquerque’s desire to bring good jobs to its residents is represented by its budding film industry, which has grown from 100 people eight years ago to 3,000 today, many of whom are locals trained for the new jobs.
Of course, this is great news and good for the whole community. However, I'd submit that the locally-owned businesses that are already here have a lot to do with Albuquerque's health (both social and economic).
I'm as starstruck as the next person (except when the movie trucks are blocking the streets...;-) but we've got a lot more going for us than the film industry. Sure, we've got problems and challenges...but we've also got mountains, gorgeous weather, and incredible diversity in both culture and business. (I always marvel whenever I take the "long way" home from downtown - breath-taking views from urban routes...and the many, many small businesses that have been in business for decades.) And, our city council - which takes a lot of knocks - recently donated $250,000 to Road Runner Food Bank (as they slashed the city budget...they did something good with the money.)
P.S. Huntsville, Alabama was #1.
