Membership Committee News
AIBA Board Member Duane Trythall is always looking for ways to make AIBA more helpful to you and your business.  Take our regular welcome calls, for instance.  We now call each new member to say hello and describe the great benefits available through AIBA, so you can make the most of your membership.
(NOTE: If you want to join this committee, please email editor@keepitquerque.org. I’ll get the info to them.)

Get Involved! AIBA Committee Meetings The Marketing committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month, 3pm at Slate Street Café. Myra Ghattas, Chair.

Our first event of the year will give you a chance to get to know your fellow BUY LOCAL supporters and AIBA Members at a relaxed social gathering.  Join us for a "Mix & Mingle" at Scalo Restaurant in Nob Hill on Sunday, January 31 from 3:00 - 5:30 pm.  Scalo's has graciously offered hors d'oeuvres and there will be a cash bar.

And yes, spouses/significant others are invited!  And this is a great time to invite a fellow local business owner to join us and learn at bit about AIBA.

There will be drawings for great gifts for AIBA members  several times during the afternoon.  Prize donations have been received from Martha's Body Buena (gift basket), Jane Bradley (earrings), Slate Street Cafe Gift Certificate (Myra Ghattas), and a new book by DJ Heckes, Full BRAIN Marketing.  AIBA members will also receive a 15% discount on dinner at Scalo's on the 31st, if they mention they are AIBA members.  Scalo is located at 3500 Central SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106 (505) 255-8781.

Our next event is the return of the popular "I Love Albuquerque" contest in February.  Jane has more details below.

And if you'd like to host a mixer or a Roundtable at your place of business and meet your fellow Buy Local supporters and businesses, please give Linda Dodson a call: 917-3008.

Last year, AIBA co-sponsored the "I Love Albuquerque" Contest and it's returning in 2010!  Anyone can enter!  Just describe, in 25 words or less, why you love Albuquerque.  A sentence or two, a poem, or a pithy mantra could win you a prize and a chance to take part in a gala awards gathering. So put your thinking caps on - more details and where to send your entries in our Feb. 1 newsletter.

If you missed getting your copy of the AIBA Member Directory insert in the Thursday, Nov. 18 issue of the Albuquerque Journal, you can get additional copies by contacting Jane Bradley 332-0419 or cell 710-6484.

Marketing Tip from Mary Schmidt, Marketing Troubleshooter

Tip #2: *Two Incredibly POWERFUL Words: Thank You.*

I recently got a snail mail thank you note from my mechanic (a fellow AIBA member, Bee Line Automotive.) Hand-written and promptly mailed. And, they answered their phone, did the work as promised, and showed up when I called with a crisis. They also have a simple, bare bones web site…that gets the job done. No flashing, bouncing images or tricky navigation. They tell me who they are; what they’ll do for me; and how to reach them, including a map.

Now, if a busy small biz can do this, why is it so hard for big biz? Duh-oh. Could it be they let processes and “creative marketing” get in the way of the people? Hmmm…As I always say, small biz can beat big biz almost every time - if they focus on the customer.

AIBA Think LOCAL! Lunch Roundtable
The Roundtable will begin again in February 2010.  See you then!
Think LOCAL! is a roundtable meeting, held the second Wednesday of every month, with your fellow AIBA members. We have a brief "get you started" presentation (10 minutes or so; No Powerpoint required!) by a subject matter pro, with a few tips. It's an informal way to get together, do some quality, low-key, low-cost networking, and share ideas.
